7 Problems The National Assembly MUST Address As It Resumes Sitting Today

The National Assembly, comprising of the Senate and the House of representatives, will resume sitting today after the completion of its annual recess that started on July 21. During the seven-week break, various events have taken place and must be addressed immediately upon resumption. The seven things are: 1.) ISSUE OF THE ECONOMY: Many expected the National Assembly, as a serious institution, to have cut short its break in other to attend to the issue of Economic recession. However, now that they are back, Nigerians would be keen to see the drastic measures and immediate actions they put in place to see that the country is taken out of its economic crisis. 2.) DIVISION IN THE CHAMBERS: One thing that has characterized the National Assembly, the Senate especially, is the inability to reach a concensus and this is largely due to the divide within the Senate as some are loyal to APC, PDP and the likes rather than loyal to making good laws for the country. 3.) BUDGET PADDING ALLEGATIONS: The 2016 budget has brought so much controversy that it threatens to tear the legislative chambers asunder. The House of Representatives seem to have come out worse as is evident in the battle between Abdulmumin Jibrin, former chairman of the house committee on appropriations and Yakubu Dogara, the speaker.4.) ALLEGATIONS, PETITIONS AND SUITS: The National Assembly must make sure that such things be kept minimal if not ended as this would slow down the lawmaking process. It is disastrous to think that the Senate President and his Deputy have court cases to answer; the Speaker and his Deputy are likely to head for court following the allegations against them. House leaders are not left out as they also have one case or the other to answer. This must stop. 5.) END THE WAR WITH THE EXECUTIVE AND JUDICIARY: The legislators believe that the executive is using the Judiciary against them. This must stop as the three must join hands to move the country forward. 6.) MEDIA WAR: All media wars must be stopped. 7.) PARTY LOYALTIES: The lawmakers must put sentiments and party loyalties aside and work for the good of all Nigerians.
